Boarding

Logo_crackle_smIn keeping with this years theme, the summer continues to be filled with change.  The Animal House has 'officially' received its boarding license - not one but two: a kennel license and a rescue license!  The next time you are in need of boarding services, please keep us in mind.
Homeward Bound Rescue
What Do I feed My Dog? Cookbook

 HB_logo
Animal House is helping-out Homeward Bound Rescue.  We are currently selling their 'dog food' cookbook written exclusively for Homeward Bound by Michelle Auman. Besides lots of 'doggie' mouth-watering recipes, the author includes a recipe to keep fleas away, a daily vitamin powder, and a quick recipe for puppy milk, as well as the Budwig cancer diet.

Feeding the family dog is a daily ritual. But the recent pet food contamination has drawn attention to just what may be in that dog bowl. There is no better time than now to purchase this book and begin making your own dog food.

The cost is $10.00 for an 82+ page, 8 1/2 x 11, soft cover book filled with recipes & information.

Fortitude Award

Goliath Award The Animal House was the recipient of the Fortitude Award, presented to us at the recent Personalized Greyhound, Inc. (PGInc) picnic in June. The Fortitude Award is given in memory of Goliath, the first Greyhound of David Hosopple & Richard Reigle. Goliath was known during his racing career as Fortitude. He stood for what his name means, Virtue, Strength and Courage, and this award continues in that tradition. It is given to a hound and/or their human for overcoming, or helping another hound overcome adversities far and beyond their normal expectation. Some very nice things were said about the Animal House during the presentation of this award ....

  • In the past 2 years, over 15 Greyhounds have resided at the Animal House for more than a week.
  • Two have remained: Bull and Cardinal, both of whom were bouncebacks multiple times. Bull has become leader of the pack and Cardinal remains a constant source of amusement with his GQ ways!
  • Sharon took Tootsie (now Branna) in without hesitation 3 days before Christmas after she ate her way thru a 6 foot section of drywall in a 'NEW' adopter's 'NEW' home.
  • Benny and Brees' first stop was Animal House after they had both been found to be living outside and neglected.
  • Sharon has taken dogs in that literally had nowhere else to go and has given them every opportunity to be rehabilitated regardless of their particular issues.
  • Sharon determined what each individual dog needed and then worked with them until they were ready to move on to a forever home.
  • Many here today are the beneficiaries of Sharon and her dogs' magic. No problem was too large; no dog was ever refused a safe haven. Many of the dogs coming through her doors would not have had a chance otherwise. No matter how difficult the situation or what time of day or night she got the call asking for help, she has always been there for PGInc and the greys without hesitation.
  •
The Animal House would like to thank PGInc and especially David & Richard for this prestigious award.  As I have said many times in the past, we do it for the dogs .... but it's nice to hear a thank you now and again. We humbly accept this award in honor of the Greyhounds ... the ex-racer who deserve a second life. Cheers to all those 45 mph couch potatoes who have had that chance!
    Meesha
    In Loving Memory

Carlisle StoreAnyone who has ever entered the Animal House doors knows Meesha.  She was the one who would greet visitors with a ferocious outburst at the front gate, only to be dismissed by us as a frivolous display.  A new customer would most likely think of us as insane as Meesha appeared.  Well, Meesha was insane having been rescued at a young age after being severely abused.

She is at peace now, having passed over the bridge on June 26, 2007.  After about a week of 'odd' symptoms including paralysis .... the diagnosis going from a vertibre problem to a stoke to finally a growth on the spinal cord ... the decision was made to euthanize her. Meesha was a proud lady who just would not understand being unable to patrol her kingdom.  She died every bit the lady she was in life surrounded by the family she loved.

Meesha's story will eventually appear on our Memorials page.

    4th Annual Greyhound Adoption Expo

    grey01

I recently attended the 4th Annual Greyhound Adoption Expo in Massachusetts along with Louise West, Executive VP for Personalized Greyhounds (PGInc). The Expo was coordinated by NGA Member Linda Jensen and sponsored by Raynham & Wonderland Greyhound Racing Parks. The event was held for adopted Greyhounds and their families.

The believing is definitely in the seeing. We put to rest our fears that all Greyhounds are abused and forced to race. Quite the opposite, in fact.  As Louise stated, "It was difficult to restrain the ex-racers as the current athletes came onto the field. The noise was deafening as our dogs cheered the racers on! They wanted nothing more than to get out onto the track and run. They immediately sensed where they were regardless of how long they'd been retired."

Wonderland held a "Fun Run" where the ex-racers were once again permitted to race. Louise's 'Shani' and my 'Cardinal' raced against each other. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Think about attending this event next year, even if you do not have a Greyhound in your life. It is truly an eye-opening experience, and who knows, maybe you'll see why so many people adopt these terrific dogs.
    Sadie - Hit by Vehicle

SadieNo one knows what breed Sadie is. Some say Corgi, some say Sheltie, but most say 'who knows'. Sadie was adopted by Jillian, our Jr volunteer here at the Animal House, from the Harrisburg Humane Society because no one else would have the scared, little thing (you see, Sadie has issues, as do most of our personal dogs).

Sadie was hit by a vehicle on July 13.  Jilly and a friend had been taking Sadie & her brother Beau for their nightly walk along Carlisle Road in Camp Hill.  Sadie had managed to get away from the girls and had run onto Carlisle Road and was run over by a speeding 'hit and run' vehicle. Thank God some not-afraid-to-get-involved citizens were willing to stop and assist a young girl and her friend who had just witnessed a dog - Jillian's best friend - run over by a car.

Sadie is home now but her prognosis is still iffy,  with the family taking one hour at a time, one day at a time.  We will, of course, be keeping you posted here. Our prayers are with Sadie & Jilly's family.
